This is a friendly and important reminder to actively monitor your student's social media and online gaming interactions. While these platforms are great for connection, negative online interactions can have a significant impact on students' well-being and, in turn, their performance and behavior at school. We are seeing an uptick in negative interactions among our students through social media platforms, including Snapchat, Tik Tok, and online gaming (via Playstation, Xbox, etc.). Some of these interactions are trickling into the classrooms and disrupting learning.
Cyberbullying, online conflicts, and exposure to inappropriate language & content can lead to increased anxiety, depression, fractured peer relationships, and behavioral problems. When students are dealing with these issues, it can be a major distraction that makes it difficult for them to focus in class, complete assignments, or engage positively with their peers and teachers. Students may also be exposed to predator danger through these platforms, some of which may seem safer (Roblox, Fortnite, etc.).
Taking an active role in your child's digital life—such as checking who they're interacting with and the content they're viewing (including student group chats) — is a crucial step in ensuring their safety and success, both in person and online.
Thank you for your partnership in keeping our students safe, healthy, and focused on learning.
