Message from Principal Reed

Happy Sunday, Clay Hill Families!

Get ready to turn the page on an incredible week! Starting tomorrow, we kick off Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! (January 26–30). This year’s theme is "Read, White, and Blue: Celebrating 250 Chapters of America," and Ms. Lowans, our rock-star media specialist, has coordinated a jam-packed schedule of guest authors, reading initiatives, and themed dress-up days to celebrate our love of reading.

We are honored to host several SSYRA authors virtually or in person to speak with our students, including Jose Pablo Iriarte (3rd–4th Grade), Deborah Underwood (1st–2nd Grade), Leigh Luna (5th–6th Grade), and Kiah Thomas (5th–6th Grade). In addition, we will engage students in buddy reading (older students read with/to younger ones), special guest readers, and daily "Mystery Readers," which will challenge students with identifying a secret staff reader.

Additionally, we invite our youngest learners to Early Literacy Night (K–2nd) on Thursday, Jan 29, from 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM at the Fleming Island High School Teacher Training Center.

We look forward to a week of inspiration, creativity, and—most importantly—great books!

Happy Reading,

Adele Reedl

The Book Fair is COMING - First Week of February!

Dear Parent/Guardian(s),

We are excited about our upcoming book fair that will be held at our school on February 2nd-13th!  The book fair is an optional event that fosters excitement around literacy and allows students to purchase books for their enjoyment.

Clay County District Schools uses an outside vendor to supply the materials for the book fair.  Both from a reading level and subject content, the appropriateness of individual titles are unique to each child’s ability and family values. Books in the book fair may contain content that is not appropriate for all ages.  Therefore, there is an opportunity for parents to preview the book fair contents online at https://preview.scholasticbookfairs.com/location/grid.

In addition, we will be hosting a family night where parents and guardians can bring their child(ren) to review, select, and purchase books. Our school will hold this event after the K-3rd grade Valentines Dance on February 6th at 4:00 - 5:00 PM.

Students will have the opportunity to visit the book fair during their media resource if they do not have an opt out form on file and have money that is designated for the book fair.  If you do not wish for your child to participate in the book fair during the school day, please complete the opt-out form and return it to your child’s homeroom teacher.

As titles vary and may not represent the content you wish for your child to consume, we encourage you to review the book fair materials your child purchases.  Our school is always willing to provide a refund or exchange for any material that is bought.

If you have any questions, please reach out to me or the school’s media specialist, Allyson Lowans, at 904-336-0775, ext. 60791.

Sincerely,

Adele Reed

Principals Books Clubs: Quarter 3

Each quarter, Mrs. Reed and Mrs. Wright select one title from the Sunshine State Young Readers for book-themed discussion and activities! We hope your child will join us for our book clubs on March 5th and 6th!

Recommended Reading, Aligned to Standards

This week is especially ideal for introducing your child to challenging reading at home! The lists below feature titles from the Florida Department of Education's B.E.S.T. Standards for English Language Arts and will provide rich literacy experiences for children across various grades. Don't hesitate to introduce your child to titles above his or her grade level!
